Themeing with Bootstrap

Just a quick update. I’ve going to try out Twitter’s Bootstrap project as a foundation for the Rum Database WordPress theme.  I may decide on something more sophisticated later on, but i think this will give me a good head start.  Also, I like their responsive capabilities (using media queries, of course) and the simplified look.  It allows for a good deal of customization down the road. It’s coming along!

Drink up, me hearties!

Rum Database to use WordPress

WordPress is a friend of mine.  But while I always knew I’d be using the blogging platform for the blog component of the Rum Database website, I was convinced that I would have to use something else – probably hand-code – the guts of the user interface.  I even build a handful of data management screens for myself which worked pretty well.  But then I stopped and though, “Before I go whole hog into developing this thing from scratch, I’d better at least do a little research.”

Rum Database is coming!

Over the past few years I have seen quite a lot of sites and apps dedicated to wine.  Wine trackers, wine inventory apps, wine research…wine, wine, wine.  There are, however, precious few resources for researching, collecting, sharing, and tracking rum (or other spirits for that matter, but I happen to be a rum enthusiast, so rum it is!)  So, I’ve decided to use my appreciation of the sweet spirit as the foundation for a new site – the Rum Database.

Over the next several months, all spend a chunk of my spare time building out a website and (if I can build the proper skill set) a mobile app.  The idea is quite simple.  I want to build and curate a database of rums – all kinds of rums – so that I and others can learn, share, and further our passion.  The wine resources are quite mature, so I’ll draw some inspiration from them.  But to make the rum database unique, I’ll try to capture  some of rum’s  unique character.  After all, it’s got a rich history steeped in legend and lore – pirates, seafaring adventure, slave trade, and song.

So, it should be a fun time getting to know more about my favorite spirit.
